Who we are

Zarapita is an independent art, design, and robotics studio based in the heart of Kenmare, Co. Kerry. Founded by artist and educator Maria Hernandez, Zarapita was created as a welcoming space where creativity, curiosity, and learning come together.

At Zarapita, we believe creativity is for everyone. Our classes are designed for children, teens, and adults of all experience levels, offering a supportive environment where students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and build confidence through hands-on making. From painting, drawing, and sculpture to robotics and coding, our programmes blend artistic expression with problem-solving and critical thinking.

Our team includes Daniel Flynn, who holds a degree in Visual Arts and leads our robotics classes. Daniel guides students through hands-on building and coding projects, helping them develop STEM skills, creativity, and confidence in a fun and engaging way.

Small group classes allow for personal guidance, ensuring each student can develop at their own pace. We value process over perfection and encourage curiosity, imagination, and creative independence in everything we do.

Inspired by the natural beauty of West Kerry and by artists who celebrate colour, form, and play, Zarapita is a space where learning feels joyful and creativity feels accessible.

Whether you are discovering art for the first time, developing technical skills, or exploring robotics and STEM, Zarapita offers a creative community where ideas come to life.

The name Zarapita

The name Zarapita comes from the Spanish word zarapito, meaning curlew — a bird known for its distinctive call and graceful presence. Curlews are resident and migratory birds in Ireland and can often be seen along Kenmare Bay, making the name a natural connection between Spanish roots and the local landscape.

For us, the curlew represents creativity, freedom, and a strong sense of place. Just as the bird moves across wide open spaces, Zarapita brings together art, design, and robotics in a studio where ideas are encouraged to travel, grow, and take shape.

The name reflects our love of nature, curiosity, and the belief that creativity should be open, expressive, and accessible to all.
